Paper Hat - Flockflockflock Call For Contributors

There’s an old saying… he who wears many hats is last to lose his head. It’s supposed to mean that cultivating a variety of skills ensures longevity. Or maybe it means that guillotine greedy mobs are easily fooled by a quick change of chapeau. Either way, words to live by.

So far Flockflockflock has been a webzine, a culture blog, a t-shirt foundry and an online vintage store. The way we figure it, paper is the only medium we haven’t dabbled in… hence the need to ZINE! That’s right, we’re cutting and pasting for the newest edition of Flockflockflock, a print and bind paper version of our online awesomeness.

Here’s where you come in. We need single page contributions in all shapes and forms. Pictures, poems, snide asides, scans of your belly button lint fashioned into a miniature sculpture of the Statue of Liberty, a rant, a doodle, a few bars of a song you wrote on your recorder in 3rd grade, a Photoshop experiment gone very very wrong. Whatever.

Seriously, whatever you want to submit, do. Chances are we’ll love it. And if we don’t, we’ll publish it on the web. If you still need a bit of guidance, the zine theme is “annum rasa.” It’s Latin. “Annum” = year/a year’s time/the period between now and the next time it’s now. “Rasa” = blank/empty/new/unused/ripe with potential.

If we print your submission in the zine, you’ll get an annum rasa issue t-shirt, our undying appreciation and bragging rights. If we pub your submission on the web, you get a free issue of the zine. If you don’t submit anything, you get nothing, except yet another opportunity to feel sorry for yourself. Them are the breaks.

Deadline: January 5th, 2009
Email all submissions to: jenhen@flockflockflock.com
Or if it’s not email-able, email jenhen@flockflockflock.com for further instructions
Watch your head.

If you don't know, now you know... CPOPpor2nity

Visual artists of all disciplines, this is your chance to be discovered by the international arts community!
No, seriously. This isn't just another call for artists, this is Detroit's CPop Gallery annual CPOPportunity.
If you don't already know, CPop has been breaking big names (such as Glenn Barr) and dominating the pages of outsider art mags (such as Juxtapoz) since 1995.
Email 3 jpegs of your latest work to rick@cpop.us and if selected, you'll have your chance to show in the CPop annual juried show for a small registration fee ($150-225, depending).
CPop's jury of visual arts luminaries will choose the gallery's 2009 roster of exhibitors from the juried show.
Translation: if they like your juried show submission, you get to share the space with 3 other artists sometime next year.
Read between the lines: This is an opportunity of a lifetime and all you need to do is send an email.
Deadline is DECEMBER 2nd! Get on it.

Vintage Sale! Vegas...

What's better than beautifully crafted clothes and accessories?

Beautifully crafted and still pristine vintage clothes and accessories. And if your appetite for fine wares from previous eras is anything like ours, finding a genuine vintage piece from a coveted design house in perfect condition can more than make your outfit, it can totally make your day (or week, or month, or entire existence, depending on whether it's 90s, 80s or 70s Chanel).

Which is why we love Annie Creamcheese in the Palazzo Las Vegas and their collection of fabulous designer vintage. And did we mention they're having a sale? Buy 2 items and get 1 free! Three outfit making designer vintage pieces might just make your afterlife. (Halloween weekend pun required.)

FRANIKE SAYS JUST DO IT!

Flockflockflock knows times are hard in the world economy...
Just today we saw some guy trying to sell the front wheel of his bike (we hope it was his bike), our 401K statement came in with lots of little red dashes all over it (we're not sure what that means but it doesn't seem promising), and unless the guy in the Wendy's drive-thru pulled a fast one on us, what used to be a 99¢ chocolate Frosty is now a $1.15 chocolate Frosty (still delicious however disappointingly inflated in price).

So we've decided to do our part to ease the economic pressures by giving away t-shirts! It's a radical plan but we really think it's going to work. Visit our friend local Las Vegas vintage store/art gallery The Gypsy Den and pick up your free FRANIKE SAYS JUST DO IT t-shirt! Supplies are limited, as is our gracious host's counter space, so boogie in this weekend and ask for your Flockflockflock t-shirt!

we nicked this pic from www.indiekrush.com

We're only promising to fix the global economic crisis, whether you look as good as DJs Remy the Restless and MDY while doing it is up to you...

P.S. Contribute to the Flockflockflock economic stimulus plan by purchasing a t-shirt or a piece of vintage from our Flockflockflock Etsy store, unless you blew all your allowance on expensive Frosties.

Show Yourself! Hello from Tokyo...

A few weeks ago our Flockflockflock Etsy vintage store made its first sale to a young lady from Tokyo named Midori. She bought this 80s princess sleeve Lady Carol candy striped dress to wear to her best friend's wedding reception.
This is Midori "nervously" delivering a congradulatory speech at the wedding reception yesterday, in Tokyo...

We love her.

Tonight! Hollywood...

I have an abiding affection for French girls that can be explained with a brief, however illustrative anecdote. Last year I had a roommate from France. Her name was Amelie. No joke, her name was Amelie Bonet, pronounced “Bone-A,” of course. We were awesome roomies. We'd go out and get sloshed at the Shortstop, come back to our apartment together and wrestle each other to sleep. Of course it couldn’t last… she was way too, “say it to my face” and I was very, “you are one real bitch,” and the next thing I know, I’m the LAPD and she’s Zsa Zsa Gabor. Good times.

Parisian singer/songwriter SoKo is another crêpeland cutie who recently caught my attention. She writes songs about wet dreams, kissing girls and killing her ex-boyfriends girlfriends. All sung sweetly and truthfully with an innocent transcendence only 18 year olds can carry with conviction. She hardly ever comes to Los Angeles. In fact, she is calling tonight her first official L.A. gig.

SoKo reminds me of the artists MTV used to discover and uncover back in the early ‘90s. Daniel Johnston comes to mind (she references him in her song I Will Never Love You More). Only SoKo’s a lot cuter than and not nearly as bi-polar as Johnston. She is a dreamy enigma, singing from the heart and the groin with the same intensity. She is confused about her place in popular music and yet incredibly confident in her craft.

If you don't know, now you know... Rebecca Turbow

New York based designer Rebecca Turbow first caught the attention of hipster fashionistas by sporting her own white and teal creations on the NYC party circuit. Cute, comfy and unassumingly iconic, Turbow's Safe Clothes have evolved from a kitsch collection of sci-fi separates into a sophisticated line of contemporary garments and accessories that even the anti-Mod Squad can embrace.

Tonight! San Francisco...

Equal parts grimy Oakland hipster and sequined lounge singer, Wallpaper is just the kind of culture mash Pop band you'd expect to come out of the raucous Bay Area club scene. Infectious hooks and self effacing narratives are the duo's hallmarks but a closer listen reveals a dinosaur radio DJ alter ego, ringtone subscription ploys and a loveably silly sensibility that can only be fully appreciated live. Souvenir Shop

In the gestational stages of online vintage shops, our Flockflockflock Etsy store (http://flockflockflock.etsy.com) is still an embryo. Especially compared to toddlers like NOIROHIO, a three- year-old EBay shop with an ever changing inventory of reasonably priced vintage finds from a myriad of decades. We’ve been fans of NOIROHIO for a while but today’s online auction had a little something extra in it that we had to share with our Vegas readers…
Notice the boy penguin has both a box of chocolates and some suggestive tongue action to offer.

Hipster Made

Cassette tapes were ever only good for two things: 120 minutes of sappy remember-when-we-were-in-love song mixes and this:
Our old friend the cassette tape is back and now instead of helping you harbor your romantic grudges it can hold your debit cards, spare change and tattered picture of your ex too! Italian designer Marcella Foschi created these handy cassette wallets to do just that. Choose your favorite complimentary color scheme or read the titles closely and pick from his collection of Euro cover artists. You’d be pretty classic popping one of these cassette wallets out of your genuine vintage 80s CASELOGIC walkman fanny pack…

TONIGHT in Vegas

RESTLESS/AFGHAN RAIDERS TONIGHT AT BEAUTY BAR LAS VEGAS!!!
Okay, so maybe we're a little over excited about tonight but who could blame us? Not only has ///Restless DJ Remy the Restless returned from his trip to Norway but the Afghan Raiders are finally back from their month-long song writing hiatus and together with a handful of guest DJs and live bands it's bound to be an excellent evening.
Remy paraphrased the night well with: "Tonight's ///RESTLESS promises to be a total blast! SC's Culture Prophet is live and in the DJ booth. Local Las Vegas favs Afghan Raiders and up-and-comers Calvary are on the outdoor stage. Our friends Grimehaus are kicking the night off early at 9pm and our giveaway of brand new, hand pulled Deepcover x Restless tees starts at 10pm. Oh, and of course MDY and I will be bringing the freshness all night with tracks you've never heard on a Vegas dance floor, as usual."

Aural Fixations

Six Barragan’s $2.49 margaritas , a bowl of albondigas (meat ball soup, real LA Mexican food, try it, you’ll like it), and I’m cabbing it home with a Little One who prefers dancing with herself to dancing with a stranger (me) but doesn’t seem to mind going to said stranger’s (still me) house to "listen to records."
Never mind that I only own 4 pieces of vinyl… a few old Beatles LPs and a Presets remix but fuck it. Then I realize that I don’t have a record player. No matter, YouTube provides us with an even better opportunity to out-obscure-music-knowledge each other in classic 23rd Century style. She types in “Beach House, Gila, the video.”
Is it a tranny or just an undiscernibly aged, slightly pudgy, unisex-y hipster? Either way, I like his voice and the video is creepier than the stranger she’s playing it for (lucky me).
