MOMENTO

If you've reached this page by following the URL printed at the top of Flockflockflock's "love you" cut and paste ZINE insert - we love you even more than before. Please note, your moustache is a sticker, simply peel off the paper backing and stick it wherever you like.

If you have no idea what we're talking about, please send your proper name and mailing address to jenhen@flockflockflock.com and we'll send you a FREE copy of our "love you" ZINE so you too can fully enjoy the experience of Buddy Cole.

This piece was inspired by a number of strange situational juxtapositions that have occurred over many months. The first was a conversation I had with Ryan Marth of The Big Friendly Corporation. We discussed a particular Kids in the Hall skit in which the same actor who plays the infamous Buddy Cole (KITH's Scott Thompson) declared "WE ARE ALL SAUSAGES!" Ryan had no recollection of this episode and some months later, when presented with the opportunity to purchase the complete collection of KITH on DVD he did so, which led to his inevitable encounter with the "Love and Sausages" skit previously discussed.
Sometime later he lent me the DVD so I might better recall the details of the skit, of which I had only a hazy recollection from my adolescent years in front of the TV. Upon watching the episode I realized that the story was not, in fact, about sausages but it was a love story in which sausages were a gift of anonymous affection not unlike a valentine. On the same DVD was a unique Buddy Cole skit where we encounter the flamboyant bar owner perched upon a gravestone in a cemetery. In the monolog that follows, Buddy shares with us a celebratory remembrance of his late friend and a glimpse of the momento he left behind.

Aside from that, all of our contributors to the Flockflockflock “love you” cut and paste ZINE have an affinity for moustaches… Mathew Ward's heartfelt sentiment lies on the center of a face in his visual work “I hope you’re happy”, Michael Hsiung’s charming characters often sport ‘staches, Bryan Hainer’s own visage is home to the moustache’s more triumphant cousin the beard and I recently encouraged our designer Brian Henry to grow a moustache, which delighted Carrie Vail on her latest visit to Las Vegas.

We love Buddy Cole and we hope you do too.

Tonight! Hollywood...

I have an abiding affection for French girls that can be explained with a brief, however illustrative anecdote. Last year I had a roommate from France. Her name was Amelie. No joke, her name was Amelie Bonet, pronounced “Bone-A,” of course. We were awesome roomies. We'd go out and get sloshed at the Shortstop, come back to our apartment together and wrestle each other to sleep. Of course it couldn’t last… she was way too, “say it to my face” and I was very, “you are one real bitch,” and the next thing I know, I’m the LAPD and she’s Zsa Zsa Gabor. Good times.

Parisian singer/songwriter SoKo is another crêpeland cutie who recently caught my attention. She writes songs about wet dreams, kissing girls and killing her ex-boyfriends girlfriends. All sung sweetly and truthfully with an innocent transcendence only 18 year olds can carry with conviction. She hardly ever comes to Los Angeles. In fact, she is calling tonight her first official L.A. gig.

SoKo reminds me of the artists MTV used to discover and uncover back in the early ‘90s. Daniel Johnston comes to mind (she references him in her song I Will Never Love You More). Only SoKo’s a lot cuter than and not nearly as bi-polar as Johnston. She is a dreamy enigma, singing from the heart and the groin with the same intensity. She is confused about her place in popular music and yet incredibly confident in her craft.

Aural Fixations

Six Barragan’s $2.49 margaritas , a bowl of albondigas (meat ball soup, real LA Mexican food, try it, you’ll like it), and I’m cabbing it home with a Little One who prefers dancing with herself to dancing with a stranger (me) but doesn’t seem to mind going to said stranger’s (still me) house to "listen to records."
Never mind that I only own 4 pieces of vinyl… a few old Beatles LPs and a Presets remix but fuck it. Then I realize that I don’t have a record player. No matter, YouTube provides us with an even better opportunity to out-obscure-music-knowledge each other in classic 23rd Century style. She types in “Beach House, Gila, the video.”
Is it a tranny or just an undiscernibly aged, slightly pudgy, unisex-y hipster? Either way, I like his voice and the video is creepier than the stranger she’s playing it for (lucky me).
